What is the minimum credit score required for a loan?

There is no single minimum credit score required to apply for or potentially qualify for a loan. Members should not be discouraged from applying based solely on their credit score.

Credit scores are one factor considered during the lending process and may affect the interest rate and terms offered. A credit score of 740 or higher is generally needed to receive our best available rates and terms; however, 740 is not a minimum score required for loan approval.

We regularly approve loans for members with credit scores below 740. A lower credit score does not automatically mean a member will be declined. We take the time to look at the member’s full financial and credit situation rather than making a decision based on a credit score alone. This broader review allows us to better understand the member’s circumstances and make a more informed lending decision.

When evaluating a loan application, qualifying factors may include the member’s debt-to-income ratio, repayment history, length of employment, existing financial obligations, and the overall information contained within the credit report. These factors are considered together to determine whether the member qualifies and, if approved, the rate and terms available.

Members with lower credit scores, limited credit history, no established credit score, or who are working to establish or rebuild credit may still qualify for a loan and are encouraged to apply. The only way to determine what loan options may be available is to evaluate the member’s complete application and financial situation.
