Celebrating Local: Spotlight on Morris, NY

December 1, 2025

Honoring Community Roots, Local Partnerships, and the Newest Home of SFCU

This December, we’re proud to shine the next spotlight in our Celebrating Local series on one of the newest additions to the SFCU family: our Morris branch. Officially opened in July 2025, this branch represents far more than a new building. It symbolizes partnership, perseverance, and the power of a community that rallied for access to essential financial services.

Nestled in the Butternut Valley region, Morris embodies everything we love about serving small towns: neighbors helping neighbors, multi-generation family businesses, and a shared commitment to lifting one another up. It’s a place rich with history and heart, and now, with SFCU firmly planted on Main Street, a place where local financial empowerment can continue to grow.

Why SFCU Came to Morris: A Mission Rooted in Service

Our presence in Morris began with a simple truth: every community deserves access to reliable, local financial services. For years, Morris and the surrounding Butternut Valley region had limited access to in-person banking, an essential resource for families, farmers, small businesses, and local governments.

That’s where the Butternut Valley Alliance (BVA) stepped in.

The BVA, a partnership representing Morris, Butternut, Gilbertsville, and Mt. Upton, recognized the impact the loss of local banking was having on the region. Through their grassroots “Save Our Bank” initiative, they explored options, searched for partners, and ultimately helped bring the right people to the table.

When the Alliance approached SFCU, the alignment was immediate.

Our mission—to promote financial accessibility and serve the underserved—matched the community’s need. And with support from the New York State Banking Development District (BDD) program, establishing a branch in Morris became not only possible, but purposeful.

Together, we set out to bring banking back to the Butternut Valley.

A Branch Built on Collaboration

The opening of the Morris branch was truly a community effort. From the temporary location that welcomed members early on, to the historic building that now houses the new branch, every step of the journey was shaped by collaboration.

“From the outset, Sidney Federal Credit Union has shown its deep commitment to the Butternut Valley. They’ve been an exceptional partner—supporting local programs, uplifting families, and even installing a hitch for horses to better serve our Amish neighbors. SFCU is truly a community bank.”

Maggie Brenner, Vice Chair of the Butternut Valley Alliance

As part of the BDD designation, SFCU can now accept municipal deposits, an important step in keeping local funds circulating right here in the community. But more than that, the Morris branch serves as a local hub for financial empowerment, offering services and support that start at birth and grow with every life stage.

This location also plays a key role in SFCU’s broader strategy to support rural towns across Central New York, including the future rollout of our mobile branch designed to reach members in communities like Downsville and Unadilla.

Here, banking is more than a transaction, it’s a relationship.
It’s belonging.
It’s growing stronger, together.
