RV Frequently Asked Questions

  • Yes, SFCU offers auto loan pre-approvals to help you shop for a vehicle with confidence.

Getting pre-approved allows you to understand how much you may be eligible to borrow before you start shopping for a car. A pre-approval can help you establish a budget, compare vehicles within your price range, and better understand your financing options before visiting a dealership or purchasing from a private seller.

Having an auto loan pre-approval can also streamline the vehicle buying process by giving you a clearer picture of your monthly payment and financing terms in advance.

To get started, apply for an auto loan with SFCU and we’ll review your application to determine your pre-approval eligibility.

  • Yes. SFCU considers applicants with a wide range of credit histories and evaluates each auto loan application individually.

Having less-than-perfect credit does not automatically disqualify you from getting an auto loan. Our lending team reviews multiple factors when evaluating an application, including credit history, income, debt obligations, and overall ability to repay the loan.

If you’re concerned about your credit, SFCU will work with you to explore available financing options and help identify solutions that fit your budget. We are committed to helping members find affordable lending options and create a manageable repayment plan whenever possible.

Applying for an auto loan can also provide an opportunity to discuss ways to strengthen your financial position and improve your future borrowing options.

  • The amount you can borrow for an auto loan depends on factors such as the vehicle’s value and your credit score,

Borrowers with a 740+ credit score can finance 125% of the MSRP or retail value including tax and tags. GAP insurance and an extended warranty up to $4,000 may be added on top of the LTV limits.

Borrowers with a 700-670 credit score can finance 120% of the MSRP or retail value including tax and tags. GAP insurance and an extended warranty up to $4,000 may be added on top of the LTV limits.

Borrowers with a 669 – 630 credit score can finance 100% of the MSRP or retail value including tax and tags. GAP insurance and an extended warranty up to $4,000 may be added on top of the LTV limits.  Proof of income will also be required.

Borrowers with a no credit score can finance 100% of the MSRP or retail value including tax and tags. GAP insurance and an extended warranty up to $4,000 may be added on top of the LTV limits.  Proof of income will also be required.

Borrowers with a 629 – 600 credit score can finance 90% of the MSRP or retail value including tax and tags. GAP insurance and an extended warranty up to $4,000 may be added on top of the LTV limits.

Borrowers with a credit score 599 and below can finance 80% of the MSRP or retail value including tax and tags. GAP insurance and an extended warranty up to $4,000 may be added on top of the LTV limits.

  • What Information Do I Need to Apply for an Auto Loan?

The information and documents you’ll need depend on whether you’ve already selected a vehicle and whether you’re purchasing from a dealership or a private seller.

What if I haven’t chosen a vehicle yet?

That’s okay. SFCU can often provide a pre-approval based on your application, giving you the flexibility to shop for your vehicle. Vehicle information will be required before your auto loan can be finalized.

What if I’m buying a vehicle from a dealership?

If you’ve already selected a vehicle and are purchasing from a dealership, you’ll need to provide a signed purchase agreement.

When you apply, you’ll also be asked for details about the vehicle, including:

    • Year
    • Make and model
    • Mileage
    • Purchase price

What if I’m buying a vehicle from a private seller?

If you’re purchasing a vehicle from a private seller, you’ll need to provide:

    • A copy of the front and back of the vehicle title
    • A lien release, if applicable
    • A purchase agreement that includes:
      • Date of purchase
      • Buyer’s name
      • Seller’s name
      • Vehicle year, make, and model
      • Vehicle Identification Number (VIN)
      • Purchase price
      • Signatures of both the buyer and seller

What if there is still a lien on the vehicle?

If the vehicle still has an outstanding lien, you’ll need to provide the current lienholder’s information, including a 10-day payoff amount.

What if I’m buying out my leased vehicle?

If you’re purchasing your vehicle at the end of a lease, SFCU will need a signed purchase contract from the leasing company before the auto loan can be finalized.

What documents are needed before my auto loan can be finalized?

Before finalizing your auto loan, SFCU will request:

    • Proof of insurance with SFCU listed as the lienholder
    • A copy of the warranty agreement, if you’re purchasing a warranty

Proof of income may also be required depending on your application and financial circumstances.

Having your vehicle information and required documents ready can help make the auto loan process faster and smoother.

  • We require a copy of your declaration page for the loan collateral (insurance binders expire after 30 days). Notices(s) will be sent if proper proof is not provided. You may ask your insurance provider to supply this if it is more convenient.
