Why are credit unions tax-exempt?

Credit unions are not-for-profit financial cooperatives owned by their members. They exist to serve people, not to generate profits for shareholders. The tax exemption helps credit unions return more value to their members in the form of lower loan rates, higher savings yields, and lower fees.
