Growing Green Savings Challenge: Celebrating National Credit Union Youth Month

March 31, 2026

April is National Credit Union Youth Month. It’s a nationwide celebration focused on helping young people build strong saving habits and lifelong financial confidence. Credit unions everywhere use this month to teach kids the importance of planning ahead, making wise financial choices, and understanding how being part of a community‑focused institution supports their growth.

Plant the Seed: Savings for Them, Support for Others

For the month of April, when a new youth account is opened, young members receive a $10 bonus to begin their savings journey.
In addition, we’ll donate $10 to local Backpack Food Programs, supported nationally by Feeding America, Blessings in a Backpack, and regional food banks. These programs provide kid‑friendly, easy‑to‑prepare meals for children who may not have reliable access to food outside of school. Items often include cereal, fruit, snacks, and simple meals that help kids return to school nourished and ready to learn.
Because of this, children learn an important lesson: saving doesn’t just grow your own future, it can lift up someone else’s too.

Foundations for Financial Confidence & Community Connection

Youth Month is an opportunity for families to help children develop essential life skills, including:

  • Managing money wisely
  • Setting and reaching savings goals
  • Understanding needs vs. wants
  • Taking responsibility for their financial choices
  • Learning the importance of supporting their community

As a result, kids grow into confident savers who understand trust, community, and shared responsibility. They also stay connected to a credit union that values service, education, and doing what’s right for the community.
To support these lessons, we offer youth‑focused tools and perks such as:

  • Zogo, our free gamified financial literacy app
  • Scholarship opportunities
  • Youth‑friendly checking, debit, and savings options
  • School partnerships, reward programs and fun branch activities

Together, these resources create a strong foundation for young members to practice smart money management in a supportive and community‑rooted environment.

How Youth Month Supports the Growing Green Savings Challenge

Although the Growing Green Savings Challenge began earlier this year, April’s Youth Month promo connects naturally with the habits the challenge encourages. Opening a youth account this month gives families a chance to think about simple, consistent saving routines. These may include weekly deposits, saving part of an allowance, or setting small goals that lead to larger ones over time.
This approach reinforces the heart of the challenge: helping kids build consistency, stay motivated, and understand how small actions add up.
Additionally, Youth Month highlights how saving isn’t only about growing money, it’s about growing responsibility, awareness, and community‑minded values.
Overall, Youth Month becomes a meaningful moment to strengthen the same smart habits and positive values that guide the Growing Green Savings Challenge.
